INTRODUCTION
Phinisi Turns to Luxury Yachts
Phinisi is traditional Indonesian wooden schooner unique to the Konjo tribe, a sub-ethnic group of Bugis-Makassar mostly residents at the Bulukumba regency of South Sulawesi, on the southern peninsula of Sulawesi. Atypical Phinisi has length of 20 to 35 meters long and size of 350 tons. The masts may reach to 30 meters above the deck.
This traditional ship was first built hundreds of years ago, and is still used widely by the Bugis mostly for inter-insular transportation, cargo and fishing purposes within Indonesian archipelago.
Today, we saw a number of yacht operators in Indonesian building these traditional schooners and converting them into luxury yachts, installing all modern equipment, amenities and comforts commonly found in modern yachts.
