Cenderawasih University Cultural Museum

The Museum Loka Budaya Universitas Cendrawasih is a specialized cultural museum located in Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the material culture of Papua’s diverse ethnic groups. This institution plays a significant role in collecting, preserving, and presenting objects that reflect the traditional lifestyles and artistic expressions of Papuan society.

Type and Management Museum

The museum is classified as a special museum, Type B, meaning it focuses on specific cultural themes rather than general history. It contains a wealth of ethnographic artifacts and material culture that illustrate the social life and traditions of Papua’s many indigenous groups

Museum Loka Budaya is owned by Cenderawasih University and operated by the university’s Technical Implementation Unit (UPT), under the supervision of the Rector. The museum’s management ties it closely to academic research and education, serving both the university community and external visitors.

History of the Museum

The museum was established in 1970 and officially inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra on October 1, 1973. Initially part of the university’s Anthropology Institute, the museum underwent administrative restructuring in the 1980s and became a UPT under the Rector’s supervision in 1990.

The museum houses approximately 2,500 cultural objects from more than 270 Papuan ethnic groups, ranging from traditional farming tools and hunting equipment to ceremonial objects, traditional garments, and symbolic carvings. These collections offer a comprehensive look into the diversity of Papuan material culture and daily life.

The museum’s vision is to become the primary center of information on Papua’s material culture, providing resources for education, research, and cultural understanding.

Its mission includes:

  1. Raising cultural awareness about Papua’s heritage.
  2. Promoting preservation of material culture as a key identity of Papuan society.
  3. Providing educational resources for students, researchers, and the general public.
  4. Supporting academic research and cultural documentation to deepen understanding of Papuan culture.
