Amerta Dirgantara Mandala Museum at Lanud Suryadarma

The Amerta Dirgantara Mandala Museum at Suryadarma Air Force Base is a specialized museum located within the complex of the Indonesian Air Force Base (Lanud) Suryadarma in Subang Regency, West Java. The museum serves as one of Indonesia’s important centers for the preservation of aviation history, particularly focusing on vintage aircraft and the development of military aviation in the archipelago.

Housed in a historic hangar built in 1917 during the Dutch colonial period, the museum features a unique and diverse collection of aviation heritage. The main museum building, along with the hangar area, apron, and parking facilities, covers a total area of approximately 9,000 square meters, providing ample space for aircraft displays and visitor activities.

In addition to showcasing physical collections, the museum functions as an educational space that presents the historical development of flight training and aviation schools in Indonesia, complemented by photographs and historical objects arranged in a clear chronological narrative.

Type and Management of the Museum

The Amerta Dirgantara Mandala Museum is classified as a specialized museum, meaning it focuses on a specific theme, in this case, aviation history and aircraft collections. Although the museum has not yet met all the national museum establishment standards set by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, it continues to serve as a significant institution for the preservation of cultural heritage and the history of aviation technology.

The museum is owned by the Information Service of the Indonesian Air Force (Dinas Penerangan TNI AU) and is operationally managed by the Information Unit of Suryadarma Air Force Base. The role of the management is crucial in maintaining the museum’s collections and delivering accurate historical information to visitors.

History of the Amerta Dirgantara Mandala Museum

The origins of the museum can be traced back to Hangar C, a Dutch-built structure constructed in 1917 as an aviation facility during the colonial era. The initiative to transform this hangar into a museum emerged from a strong appreciation for vintage aircraft and aviation artifacts, which were then preserved and displayed as historical collections.

The museum was officially inaugurated on April 10, 1982, by Marshal Ashadi Tjahyadi, and has since occupied the same hangar complex at Suryadarma Air Force Base. The establishment of the museum was closely linked to efforts to preserve historic aircraft and document early aviation activities, including aircraft used during the formative years of the Indonesian Air Force.

Museum Collections

Although the number of collections is relatively limited, the museum displays at least six types of aircraft that represent key milestones in the history of Indonesian aviation. These include the Piper J-3 Cub, Grumman G-21 Goose, Lockheed Lodestar, PZL Wilga/Gelatik, and Cessna 172.

In addition to aircraft, the museum also features historical photographs related to aviation education, as well as important artifacts from flight training institutions and military technical schools.

Vision and Mission of the Museum

To date, the Amerta Dirgantara Mandala Museum has not published an official vision and mission statement in publicly available documentation.

Nevertheless, the museum’s functions are clearly aligned with several key objectives: preserving the history of Indonesian aviation and aerospace technology, particularly valuable heritage aircraft and artifacts; providing an educational space for the public to access information about the development of aviation in Indonesia; and inspiring younger generations to better understand and appreciate the growth of the national aerospace sector.

The museum’s role as both a learning center and a guardian of historical heritage ensures its continued relevance as a cultural and educational institution in West Java.

Educational and Cultural Role

The Amerta Dirgantara Mandala Museum is not merely a place for storing aircraft collections but also serves as an engaging learning destination, especially for students, researchers, and aviation enthusiasts. Historical information is presented systematically and chronologically, allowing visitors to clearly understand the evolution of aviation in Indonesia over time.

Visiting the museum offers a unique experience, enabling visitors to see historic aircraft up close and gain insight into their historical significance for the development of the Indonesian Air Force and the nation’s aviation history.
