Classified as a general museum (Type B), Mpu Tantular Museum houses a large collection of archaeological, ethnographic, historical, numismatic, filological, and ceramic artifacts. Its exhibits span multiple civilizations and historical periods.

The museum is owned by the Government of East Java Province and managed by the East Java Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism as a Technical Implementation Unit (UPT). This governance ensures professional oversight of preservation and cultural programming.

The History of The Museum Negeri Mpu Tantular

Originally founded as the Stedelijk Historisch Museum Surabaya by German-born collector Godfried Hariowald von Faber, the museum first opened on 25 July 1937. It underwent several name and location changes over the years.

In 1974, the institution became the Museum Negeri Provinsi Jawa Timur “Mpu Tantular”, marking its status as a state museum. Due to an expanding collection, the museum was eventually relocated in 2004 to its permanent site on Jalan Raya Buduran, Sidoarjo.
