The Magat Sari Grand Mosque began construction during the final period of Sultan Thaha’s struggle, when he led the Malay Sultanate in Jambi against the Dutch. The mosque is believed to have been completed around 1906. According to historical records, the mosque stands on waqf land donated by Sheikh Hasan bin Ahmad Bafadhal, which had been inherited since 1279 Hijri (approximately the 1850s AD), during the reign of the Jambi Sultanate under Pangeran Mangku Negara.
