The Kauman Grand Mosque was built by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I with Kyai Faqih Ibrahim Diponingrat (the first head of the palace) and Kyai Wiryokusumo as its architect. This mosque was built on Ahad Wage, May 29, 1773 AD or 6 Rabiulakhir 1187 H. The construction of this mosque emphasizes the identity of the Yogyakarta Palace as an Islamic kingdom that still maintains Javanese cultural values. Its strategic location, namely to the west of the North Square and adjacent to the Yogyakarta Palace, reflects the traditional Javanese spatial concept that places the mosque, the center of government, and the center of the economy in one area.
