The museum structure itself is a former palace or Tongkonan, situated on Bukit Sanggala, with traditional rice barns (alang) displayed in front as symbols of social status and cultural identity.
The name Buntu Kalando comes from the Toraja terms buntu (“stone”) and kalando (“hill”), reflecting the elevated location chosen by the traditional ruling class.
Management & Collection
The museum is owned and managed by Yayasan Passanan Tengko Sangalla, responsible for the care, display, and interpretation of the museum’s collections.
Buntu Kalando Museum houses a diverse collection of artefacts, including traditional warrior attire, ceremonial dress, household items, musical instruments, ceramics, and heritage weapons — altogether numbering over 700 artefacts.
