The Madinatul Iman Mosque, now known as the Balikpapan Islamic Centre, was built with a design concept inspired by the Prophet’s Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) in Medina. The mosque was inaugurated by former Mayor Rizal Effendi during the 120th anniversary of Balikpapan City on February 10, 2017. The construction of the Balikpapan Islamic Centre area began in 2014 and was designed to accommodate tens of thousands of worshippers. The mosque stands on a land area of 150,000 square meters, with a building area of 85,000 square meters, and has a capacity of more than 10,000 worshippers.
