The Banggai District Museum

The Banggai District Museum, located in Central Sulawesi Province, is a museum officially opened in 2005. This museum was established to preserve the historical heritage of the Banggai people, one of which is the museum building itself, which used to be the residence of the 33rd Banggai King. The building is a Dutch heritage built in 1926 and used as the residence of King Banggai, H.S.A. Amir.

After several functional changes, the building was once converted into the Health Office of the Luwuk Military District Command before finally being inaugurated as the Regional Museum in 2005 by the Regent of Banggai, Drs. Ma’mun Amir. This building is also popularly known as the Dutch Captain's House.

At its inception, the museum only had 101 collections borrowed from the Central Sulawesi Provincial Museum. Currently, the museum displays various photos, dioramas, and replicas of objects. Additionally, there is a collection of traditional Luwuk Banggai clothing from three different tribes. The yellow clothing originates from the Saluan Tribe, the black clothing from the Balantak Tribe, and the pink clothing from the Banggai Tribe. There is also a replica of the Maleo bird egg (Macrocephalon maleo), a rare endemic species that is nearly extinct and has become an icon of Luwuk Banggai City.
