History of the Museum

The museum is housed in a historic building constructed in 1870 in a neo-classical architectural style originally serving as the Raad van Justitie (colonial court). After several changes in use — including military quarters and city government offices — the site became Balai Seni Rupa Jakarta in 1976 and later was expanded to include a ceramics gallery in 1977. In 1990, the two were merged to form the Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum that we know today.

Museum Collections

The museum showcases a wide range of museum collections, including:

  • Hundreds of Indonesian fine art works — paintings, sculptures, sketches, and contemporary pieces by renowned artists.
  • A large array of ceramic artifacts from various Indonesian regions and foreign countries such as China, Japan, Thailand, and Europe.
  • Reference libraries and educational facilities that enhance the learning experience for students and art enthusiasts.

Vision

The museum’s vision is to become a leading center for the preservation of Indonesian fine arts and ceramics, serving both cultural tourism and international art appreciation.

Key missions include:

  1. Preserving Indonesia’s artistic and ceramic heritage in a way that is accessible to the public.
  2. Hosting exhibitions, workshops, and art outreach programs that foster deeper understanding of art history.
  3. Creating educational experiences that encourage appreciation of Indonesia’s visual arts among young people.
  4. Promoting pride in Indonesia’s artistic legacy through engaging and informative storytelling.
