Indonesian Cancer Museum

The Indonesian Cancer Museum (locally known as Museum Kanker Indonesia) is a specialty museum located in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. Officially registered in the National Museum registry and part of the Museum Indonesia network, this museum was established to educate the public about cancer—from prevention and early detection to treatment and rehabilitation—through real artefacts and information. 

This institution is managed by the Yayasan Kanker Wisnuwardhana (YKW), a foundation focused on cancer care and awareness. The museum opened on 2 November 2013, aiming to be a world-leading educational space on cancer. 

 

What Is the Indonesian Cancer Museum?

The Indonesian Cancer Museum was founded to collect, conserve, research, and exhibit cancer-related materials to support public learning, research, community service, entertainment, and insight into the disease’s cultural and historical impact. The collections address prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care. 

 

Type & Classification

The museum is categorized as a special museum, Type B, emphasizing a focused thematic approach related to cancer education and awareness. 

 

Management

Managed by Yayasan Kanker Wisnuwardhana, the museum curates its collections, organizes educational programs, and collaborates with various partners in health education and advocacy. 

 

History

The museum was inaugurated on 2 November 2013 as a response to the need for public education about cancer and its impact. It builds on the legacy of YKW, one of Indonesia’s longstanding cancer-focused organizations.

The museum’s collections include artefacts related to cancer detection and prevention tools, educational materials, historical data, and displays that engage multiple human senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste) to deepen understanding.

Its vision is to become a leading cancer museum in the world, providing authoritative knowledge and fostering awareness about cancer worldwide. 

 

Mission

The museum’s mission includes collecting và conserving cancer artefacts, communicating cancer knowledge to the public, providing educational support for research and community service, fostering collaboration with stakeholders, and developing educational media to raise cancer awareness.

As an educational hub, the Indonesian Cancer Museum plays a vital role in informing visitors, students, and health practitioners about the realities of cancer. Its exhibitions and programs help encourage early detection, prevention practices, and a more informed public approach toward cancer care.
