The UPTD Museum Subak

The UPTD Museum Subak is a specialized museum in Tabanan Regency, Bali dedicated to preserving and showcasing the traditional Balinese subak irrigation system. Beyond being a repository of objects, it serves as an educational and cultural destination that reflects the social and philosophical values of subak—a heritage recognized by UNESCO in 2012.

Get To Know UPTD Museum Subak

The museum was established to protect and introduce the subak system, a centuries‑old agrarian irrigation tradition deeply rooted in Balinese culture. Subak integrates water management with religious and communal practices, embodying the Tri Hita Karana philosophy—harmonious relations among humans, nature, and the divine.

Type and Management UPTD Museum Subak

Categorized as a special museum (Type A), UPTD Museum Subak focuses on artifacts, documentation, and educational content specifically related to subak. This thematic focus makes it a key reference for those studying traditional agricultural systems and Balinese cultural heritage.

The museum is owned by the Government of Tabanan Regency and managed by the Tabanan Regency Cultural Office. This local governance supports cultural preservation while enhancing visitor engagement through well‑curated exhibitions and informational displays.

The History of UPTD Museum Subak

The idea of founding Museum Subak was championed by Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra and local cultural expert I Gusti Ketut Kaler in the mid‑1970s. Because Tabanan has the highest number of subak systems and Bali’s largest rice fields, it was chosen as the museum’s location. Museum Subak was officially inaugurated on October 13, 1981 by the Governor of Bali, Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra.

Vision UPTD Museum Subak

The museum’s vision is to become an active institution supporting the preservation of subak as a noble cultural heritage of the nation.
