Museum Batik Tiga Negeri Lasem

Museum Batik Tiga Negeri Lasem is a specialized museum dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Lasem Batik, a distinctive coastal batik tradition from Rembang Regency, Central Java. Known for its iconic red tones and cross-cultural influences, Lasem Batik represents a unique blend of Javanese, Chinese, and European traditions.

The establishment of Museum Batik Tiga Negeri Lasem reflects a strong commitment to safeguarding Indonesia’s intangible cultural heritage. More than an exhibition space, the museum functions as an educational center that explores the historical journey and artistic evolution of Lasem Batik.

History of Museum Batik Tiga Negeri Lasem

The museum was founded in 2019 following the discovery of batik motif sketches created by Johanna Tjoa, a significant figure in the history of Lasem Batik. These sketches were found in the former Tjoa family residence, which changed ownership in 2018.

Initially, the museum occupied the pavilion of Johanna Tjoa’s house. In 2024, it relocated to a newly designated building serving as both a museum and batik gallery. Ongoing restoration efforts aim to move the museum into the main Johanna Tjoa house in the future.

Museum Batik Tiga Negeri Lasem is a specialized museum focusing on the history, motifs, and development of Lasem Batik, particularly the “Tiga Negeri” concept, which symbolizes multicultural influences. The museum offers visitors insights into batik as a cultural narrative and historical expression rather than merely a textile product.
