UPTD Museum Semarajaya is a prominent history museum located in Klungkung Regency, Bali, Indonesia. As a regional cultural institution, the museum serves as an essential repository for artifacts and records that preserve the heritage of the Klungkung Kingdom and the historic Puputan Klungkung event, making it a must-visit destination for culture enthusiasts, students, and researchers.

What is UPTD Museum Semarajaya

UPTD Museum Semarajaya is a public general museum tasked with collecting, safeguarding, and exhibiting historical objects that reflect the rich cultural and social history of Bali’s eastern region. As a District Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD), it operates under local government authority, bringing history closer to the community through exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural outreach. Classified as a Type A general museum, Museum Semarajaya offers an extensive range of collections and services in the field of history and cultural heritage.

Museum Type and Collections

As a general museum, UPTD Museum Semarajaya displays diverse collections that include traditional household items, ceremonial tools, weaponry, artistic works, and other historical objects. These exhibits help illustrate the daily life, cultural practices, and historical developments of the Balinese people, with special focus on the Klungkung Kingdom. Its status as a Type A museum reflects a high level of institutional capacity and cultural significance.

History and Establishment

Museum Semarajaya was established to commemorate the Puputan Klungkung — a powerful and tragic historical event that took place on April 28, 1908, when Balinese forces faced Dutch colonial troops. This conflict resulted in the death of key figures, such as King Ida I Dewa Agung Gede Jambe, who had ascended the throne in 1904.

The museum building itself was originally constructed as a Dutch-era MULO school (Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs) in 1925 and later housed Klungkung Junior High School No. 1. It stands within the historic Kertha Gosa/Taman Gili Complex, once part of the royal palace grounds at the Pemedal Agung gate. Following the collapse of the Klungkung Kingdom, the colonial government erected this structure, which combines Dutch and Balinese architectural styles. On April 28, 1992, the museum was officially inaugurated by the Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs, Rudini, reinforcing its cultural importance.
