Museum Prabu Geusan Ulun

History of the Prabu Geusan Ulun Museum

The origins of the Prabu Geusan Ulun Museum trace back to the establishment of the Yayasan Pangeran Aria Suria Atmadja (YPSA) in 1950. The foundation was created to manage the endowment assets of Pangeran Aria Soeria Atmadja, who served as Regent of Sumedang from 1882 to 1919.

In 1955, the foundation changed its name to Yayasan Pangeran Sumedang (YPS). Organizational developments continued, and in 2017, the management of the museum was formally transferred to the Yayasan Nazhir Wakaf Pangeran Sumedang to fulfill the original endowment mandate.

The name “Prabu Geusan Ulun Museum” was officially adopted on March 13, 1974, following the West Java History Seminar held in Sumedang from March 7–13, 1974, as a tribute to Sumedang’s ancestral heritage.

The Prabu Geusan Ulun Museum is a specialized museum dedicated to preserving historical endowments and heritage associated with Sumedang’s prominent figures, particularly Pangeran Aria Soeria Atmadja. It functions as a public education center highlighting local history and cultural identity.

The museum is officially registered under the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 32.11.K.06.0228.

The Prabu Geusan Ulun Museum is categorized as a Specialized Museum, focusing on specific historical themes related to Sumedang’s heritage. In terms of standardization, it is currently listed as a museum that has not yet met national museum standards, while still actively serving cultural preservation purposes.
