State Museum of Papua Province: Cultural Heritage of Papua

The Museum Negeri Provinsi Papua, or State Museum of Papua Province, is a public museum located in Waena, Jayapura City, Papua, Indonesia. It serves as a key institution for preserving Papua’s diverse cultural heritage, local history, and natural artifacts.

The museum offers insight into the rich traditions of the many ethnic groups in Papua and acts as an educational resource for local, national, and international visitors interested in the region’s history and culture.

Type and Management Museum 

The State Museum of Papua Province is classified as a general museum, collecting interdisciplinary artifacts that represent the culture, nature, and history of Papua. Although it is currently listed as not yet meeting national standards, the museum continues to develop its collection and facilities to better serve the public and academic communities.

The museum is owned by the Papua Provincial Government and managed by the Papua Provincial Office of Culture. The museum’s technical management is carried out by a regional technical implementing unit dedicated to preserving the museum’s collections and conducting educational programming.

History of the Museum

Construction of the museum began in 1981 and continued through 1982. However, it was officially inaugurated on October 23, 1990, by Indonesia’s Minister of Education and Culture, Prof. Dr. Fuad Hassan. The organizational structure and operational guidelines were formalized under Ministerial Decree No. 001/O/1991 on January 9, 1991.

Originally known as the Museum Negeri Provinsi Irian Jaya, it has played an ongoing role in safeguarding indigenous Papuan cultural treasures and sharing them with future generations.

Collections at the Museum

The museum holds approximately 3,447 items in its collection, including ethnographic objects, archaeological artifacts, natural history specimens, historic documents, coins, ceramics, traditional art, maps, and dioramas that tell the story of Papua’s people and environment.

The exhibits also include traditional ceremonial tools, indigenous technology, and various cultural artifacts that depict the diverse lifestyles and customs of communities across Papua.

This vision underscores the museum’s role as a cultural education hub that supports community growth and harmony.

  2. Organizing collection management, research, and documentation.
  3. Preparing conservation and exhibition programming.
  4. Providing cultural education and outreach.
  5. Enhancing public participation in cultural preservation.
  6. Strengthening cultural cooperation among institutions.
  7. Managing the museum’s collections administratively.
  8. Utilizing resources efficiently.
  9. Reporting performance outcomes (LAKIP).
