The Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. As a token of gratitude for the independence achieved by the Republic of Indonesia, the word Istiqlal itself can be translated to mean "Independence". The initial idea for the construction of this mosque came from Mr. KH. Wahid Hasyim (Minister of Religious Affairs in 1950) and Mr. Anwar Cokroaminoto.
