UPT Museum La Galigo

UPT Museum and Cultural Park South Sulawesi, commonly known as Museum La Galigo, is a general museumlocated in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, officially registered in the National Museum registry with registration number 73.71.U.03.0077. It forms part of the Museum Indonesia network, preserving the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region. 

The museum’s name, La Galigo, comes from the legendary Bugis epic literature reflecting the deep history and identity of the local Bugis–Makassar people. 

 

Type & Classification

Museum La Galigo is classified as a Type A general museum, indicating a wide-ranging collection and significant educational role for society. 

 

History of the Museum

The roots of museology in South Sulawesi began in 1938 with the establishment of the Celebes Museum by the Dutch colonial government in Makassar. 

Later, local cultural figures revived the museum, which was officially established as Museum La Galigo on May 1, 1970. Its permanent exhibition hall was inaugurated on February 24, 1974 by the Indonesian Ministry of Culture. The institution became a provincial museum and later an official cultural unit under the local cultural department during the decentralization era. 

Today, it operates from within the historic Fort Rotterdam complex, which itself is a cultural heritage site in Makassar. 

 

Management

The museum is owned by the South Sulawesi Provincial Government and managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism through its UPT Museum and Cultural Park South Sulawesi

The managing body oversees the conservation of collections, exhibition programs, and educational outreach.

 

Museum Collections

Museum La Galigo holds about 4,999 artifacts representing prehistoric objects, archaeological finds, numismatic items, foreign ceramics, historical objects, and ethnographic collections from the four major local ethnic groups: Bugis, Makassar, Mandar, and Toraja. 

These collections include everyday technology, ceremonial items, traditional tools, and items from local kingdoms and prominent historical periods, offering visitors a comprehensive cultural experience. 

 

Vision & Mission

Vision: To strengthen internal cultural development so the museum can fulfill its duties and functions effectively as a cultural learning center in Eastern Indonesia. 

Mission: To establish the museum as a center of learning and recreation, enhance cultural services, preserve traditional arts, disseminate cultural information, and increase utilization of cultural landmarks like Fort Rotterdam as part of educational heritage tourism.
