The historic building that houses the National Awakening Museum in Jakarta is a silent witness to the struggle of the Indonesian nation. The National Awakening Museum was the first medical school in Indonesia or a medical education school for the native sons established by the Dutch in 1851. This museum not only served as an educational institution but also became the birthplace of national spirit among Indonesian youth. STOVIA students were required to live in the dormitories of this building, so both the dormitory rooms and lecture halls carry profound meanings about the struggle to attain independence.
In 1908, the National Awakening Museum witnessed the birth of the first modern organization in Indonesia, Boedi Oetomo. Youths from various backgrounds joined this organization to voice aspirations and fight for independence. IHA is committed to turn Muskitnas, as not only into a historic site, but a home of awakening and a national education platform for anyone who wants to understand the spirit of independence and unity of the nation.
