The Tolak Bala Ceremony is a sacred tradition of the Malay community in West Kalimantan, held annually on the last Wednesday of the month of Safar in the Hijri calendar. The primary purpose of this ritual is to seek protection from misfortune and to honor the memory of the great historical figure, Opu Daeng Menambon. The celebration is brought to life with various traditional Malay performances, ranging from Jepin dances and Tundang (melodic poems) to the exhilarating bidar boat races that captivate the local crowds. Beyond the festivities, a deep sense of kinship is felt as families gather to share meals in their courtyards and neighborhood alleys, creating a harmony that strengthens communal bonds while preserving the rich tapestry of local customs and culture.
