Museum Sonyine Malige

Museum Sonyine Malige is one of the most important museums in eastern Indonesia, preserving the historical legacy of the Tidore Sultanate. Located in Tidore Islands City, North Maluku, the museum stands as a testament to the region’s political, cultural, and governmental history.

More than a historical repository, Museum Sonyine Malige serves as an educational and cultural information center that supports local tourism. The museum plays a key role in raising public awareness about the importance of preserving Tidore’s historical and cultural heritage.

History of Museum Sonyine Malige

The building that houses Museum Sonyine Malige was originally the Swapraja Palace of the Tidore Sultanate, used between 1905 and 1947. In 1956, it became the administrative center of the West Irian Struggle Province, headquartered in Soasio, Tidore.

Covering a building area of approximately 300 square meters and a total land area of 800 square meters, the site was donated by relatives of the sultan to safeguard valuable historical objects. The museum was officially inaugurated in 1982 by the Director General of Culture, Prof. Dr. Haryati Soebadio.

Museum Sonyine Malige is a general museum that presents the history and culture of Tidore, particularly related to the Tidore Sultanate. The museum is officially registered under the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 82.72.U.05.0304.

As a general museum, it showcases various aspects of Tidore society, including traditional governance, cultural values, and historical artifacts that reflect the region’s identity.

Museum Type and Classification

Museum Sonyine Malige is classified as a General Museum due to its broad thematic scope. In terms of standardization, the museum is currently not yet standardized, although it continues to operate as an active center for education and cultural preservation.

Ownership and Management

The museum is owned by the Government of Tidore Islands City and managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Tidore Islands City, which oversees daily operations, collection preservation, and the development of educational and tourism programs.

Currently, Museum Sonyine Malige has no quantitatively recorded collections. However, its thematic collections consist of historical and ethnographic objects, including the royal throne once used by the Sultan of Tidore, which stands as a powerful symbol of the sultanate’s authority.
