What Is Sri Baduga State Museum?

The Sri Baduga State Museum (Museum Negeri Provinsi Jawa Barat Sri Baduga) is a major museum located in Bandung, West Java Province, Indonesia, officially registered in the National Museum registry under registration number 32.73.U.03.0029. It is part of the Museum Indonesia network that preserves cultural and historical heritage across the archipelago. 

It serves as a cultural institution where visitors can learn about natural history, traditional culture, and historical developments of West Java from prehistoric times to the present. 

Type & Classification

The museum is classified as a General Museum, Type A, which indicates a comprehensive collection and adequate facilities for exhibition, research, and public education. 

Museum History

Originally established in 1974 on the site of the former Kawedanan Tegallega administrative building, the museum was officially opened on 5 June 1980 by Indonesia’s then Minister of Education and Culture, Dr. Daoed Joesoef

In 1990, the institution adopted the name Sri Baduga State Museum, honoring Sri Baduga Maharaja, a prominent king in Sunda history remembered for leading the Kingdom of Pajajaran to prosperity. 

Management

Owned by the West Java Provincial Government and managed by the Provincial Tourism and Culture Office, the museum’s administration focuses on collection care, exhibitions, and educational programming. 

Museum Collections

With more than 6,000 artifacts, the Sri Baduga Museum’s collections span multiple categories: geology, biology, ethnography, archaeology, history, numismatics, philology, ceramics, fine arts, and technology. These artifacts offer insights into West Java’s environment, traditional society, and cultural interactions.

The museum’s vision is to be an inspirational cultural destination that highlights West Java’s heritage within Indonesia’s broader historical context. 

Its mission includes preserving cultural treasures, fostering public appreciation, and providing continuous educational services to connect visitors with history and culture. 

Role in National Museum & Museum Indonesia

As part of the National Museum registry and the Museum Indonesia system, the Sri Baduga Museum plays a vital role in preserving and showcasing West Java’s cultural and historical legacy. It supports research, education, and cultural tourism, reinforcing Indonesia’s commitment to protecting its museum collections.
