On 29 February 2020, President Joko Widodo declared a national state of emergency over the COVID-19 outbreak in Indonesia. Since then, many preventive measures have been taken in order to mitigate the spread of the disease.

1 | What’s being done by the government

  • The emergency facilities for COVID-19 patients are being rapidly developed by the government. The Athlete’s Village or Wisma Atlet in North Jakarta, which was used in previous Asian Games 2018, will be designated as a quarantine zone for people with symptoms of COVID-19. The emergency facility is expected to be well-equipped and will hold the capacity to accommodate 22,200 patients. It is estimated that on Monday (23/3), 2,400 rooms will be ready for quarantine. Moreover, Sebaru Island in Thousand Islands and Galang Island in Riau Islands are also preparing treatment facilities, which are expected to be ready on 28 March 2020.
  • The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government sprayed disinfectant on several roads in five urban areas of DKI Jakarta Province on Sunday, 22 March 2020. The spray was done by a team of 100 firefighters in each city area. The supporting equipment prepared by the Provincial Fire and Rescue Service includes backpacks for each personnel, 4,000 and 10,000-liter pump cars, pump motors, URC motors, and standardized personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Some local governments had already implemented temporary restrictions on mass gatherings and had shut down public places, including schools and entertainment spots such as family karaoke, live music pub, and disco. These policies were implemented in several regions, such as Jakarta, Malang, Solo, and Surabaya.
  • The C-130 Hercules TNI aircraft carrying medical equipment from China reached Natuna on Sunday, 22 March 2020. The medical aid includes disposable masks, N95 masks, protective suits, goggles, gloves, shoe covers, infrared thermometers, and surgical caps which will be used in the future for handling the outbreak of COVID-19 in Indonesia.

a| Social distancing

Social distancing means maintaining a distance between you and others and reducing close contact.

It is important because COVID-19 is most likely to spread from person-to-person through:

  • Direct contact with an infected person and sometimes even before that person has developed symptoms 
  • Direct contact with the respiratory droplets of an infected person who coughs or sneezes
  • Touching objects or surfaces (such as door handles or tables) contaminated from an infected person’s cough or sneeze and then touching your own mouth or face.

So, the more the distance between you and others, the harder it is for the virus to spread. Hence, it is advised to avoid close contact with other people by staying more than 1.5 meters away from them.

Practicing good hygiene habits is also required, such as:

  • Washing hands frequently with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet

  • Covering your mouth and nose with an elbow when coughing and sneezing, dispose of used tissues, and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer

  • Avoiding handshakes and kisses

  • Regularly disinfecting high-touch surfaces, such as tables, kitchen benches, and doorknobs

  • Increasing ventilation in the home by opening windows or adjusting the air conditioning

Indonesian Government has advised all of its citizens to work from home to reduce unnecessary mass gatherings and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

3 | What you can do to help

  • You can spread positivity and stay productive while you #stayathome. Try to write or record a video/podcast about how you are trying to get through self-isolation in a fun, creative, and inspiring way. Post it on your social media platforms.

  • If you can’t meet them outside, you can always do it online. Support your friends and family; ask about their well-being and health via phone, messages and video calls. Interact with them even if it’s just small talks and chit chats. More importantly, tell them how much they mean to you and encourage them to maintain good personal hygiene and social distancing.

  • Many industries, including the culinary and food industry, have been significantly impacted by the outbreak of COVID-19. Therefore, enabling small businesses to thrive is the least you can do to help the economy recover and to help low-income families get back on their feet. And there are many other things that you can do, for example, buy supplies from small grocery stores near your place.
