Museum Nekara: Preserving Selayar’s Cultural Legacy

Museum Nekara is an important part of Museum Indonesia and has been registered under the national Museum Registration system as a museum that preserves cultural heritage and historical artifacts from Kepulauan Selayar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. 

The museum’s name is inspired by the nekara, a bronze artifact that represents the cultural identity of the local community.

Museum Nekara serves as a regional cultural institution responsible for collecting, conserving, exhibiting, and communicating museum collections that reflect the history and cultural development of Selayar Island. Its collections provide visitors with insights into traditional life, trade, and intercultural interactions.

History of Museum Nekara

Established following a local government decision on 15 March 1980, the museum began operations on 2 June 1980. Named after the nekara artifact, it was founded to foster appreciation for the region’s cultural treasures. 

Over time, Museum Nekara became an official Unit Pelaksana Teknis Daerah (UPTD) under the local cultural authority, reflecting its role in cultural preservation. 

Museum Collections

Museum Nekara houses a significant collection of over 10,000 artifacts that span multiple categories:

  • Archaeological artifacts including bronze items and tools. 
  • Numismatic & heraldic items: coins and historical monetary artifacts. 
  • Ceramics: foreign and local ceramics tracing maritime connections. 
  • Ethnographic & historical items: reflecting Selayar’s cultural identity. 
  • **Linguistic and technological collections. 

These collections help illustrate the island’s cultural evolution and its historical linkages to global trade.
