More than offering a pleasant holiday resort for tourists, the Sumba Hospitality Foundation (SHF) was primarily created based on the conviction that by offering vocational education in hospitality, the young Sumba students could be provided with the skills they need, thereby boosting employment opportunities on the island. Strengthened by the mission to Educate and Empower a sustainable future, SHF also aims to educate and develop students’ awareness of their responsibility towards the beautiful environment and heritage they have inherited; and in the long run develop Sumba as an ideal example of sustainable tourism, one which involves the local population and protects the environment, their heritage. And the natural beauty of the island.

In September 2017, The Sumba Hospitality Foundation held its first Sustainable Tourism Conference where both locals and international stakeholders joined hand in hand to create a Sustainable Tourism Development Plan for Sumba. The transformation and growth of the campus wonderfully mirrors the confidence and progress of the students, who are now fully immersed within their chosen professions and continue to develop their practical skills through professional services to hotel guests who come from all over the world.

Sumba itself is connected by air via the Tambolaka Airport in Southwest Sumba Regency and the Umbu Mehang Kunda airport in Waingapu Town, East Sumba Regency. Most flights to the island depart from Bali, so if you are in another city make sure to first get to Bali or catch a connecting flight in Bali. Garuda Indonesia, Wings Air, and Nam Air serve daily flights between Bali and Tambolaka. Wings Air also serves daily flights between Bali and Waingapu, while NAM Air serves the Bali-Waingapu flights 3 times weekly. There are also flights from Kupang and Ende on Flores island to Waingapu, that are served by Garuda Indonesia, Wings Air and NAM Air.
