History of Museum Tekstil
The history of Museum Tekstil began in the mid-1970s, a period marked by a noticeable decline in the use of traditional Indonesian textiles. Public understanding of how to wear and appreciate wastra, as well as its quality and quantity, was gradually diminishing. Concerned by this trend, a group of textile enthusiasts formed an organization called Himpunan Wastraprema, dedicated to the preservation and study of Indonesian traditional fabrics.
Himpunan Wastraprema donated 500 high-quality textile pieces, which were accommodated by the Jakarta Government through the provision of a dedicated museum space. The museum was officially inaugurated on 28 June 1976 by Tien Soeharto. As the collection expanded, two additional buildings were constructed in 1985 to support conservation rooms, storage facilities, exhibition spaces, an auditorium, library, and administrative offices.
Following the recognition of Indonesian Batik as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, Museum Tekstil collaborated with the Indonesian Batik Foundation to inaugurate the Indonesian Batik Gallery on 2 October 2010. This gallery features batik collections from across Indonesia, strengthening the museum’s role as a national textile reference center.
Museum Tekstil is a specialized museum (Museum Khusus) with a Type A classification, indicating its national-level significance. It is officially registered under the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 31.73.K.03.0094. The museum is owned by the Government of DKI Jakarta and managed by the Dinas Kebudayaan Provinsi DKI Jakarta.
The museum focuses exclusively on wastra, a term referring to traditional Indonesian textiles, including woven, dyed, and embroidered fabrics that reflect regional history, social status, rituals, and artistic expression.

Museum Collections
Museum Tekstil houses more than 101 textile collections, representing various regions and traditions of Indonesia. These include shawls, long cloths, sarongs, headcloths, baby carriers, tie-dyed shawls (jumpatan), Wayang Gedog screens, Geringsing cloth, Ulos Ragi Hotang, Hinggi Kombu, and many other rare and valuable textiles. Each collection reflects unique techniques, materials, and cultural symbolism passed down through generations.
