Glagah Wangi Museum

Glagah Wangi Museum is a general museum located in Demak Regency, Central Java, Indonesia, officially registered in the National Museum registry and part of the Museum Indonesia system. The museum preserves cultural artefacts and historical evidence from Demak’s long history.

The name comes from an old settlement known for fragrant trees (glagah wangi), reflecting local heritage and identity.

Type & Classification

The museum is classified as a Type C general museum — holding diverse categories of artefacts rather than being limited to one specific theme.

History

Established officially through a regional decree in 2007, the museum is housed in a historic building once used for government offices and later repurposed to store and exhibit cultural collections from the community.

The building itself is recognized as a cultural heritage structure, featuring traditional wooden flooring and shingle roofing.

Management

Glagah Wangi Museum is owned by the Demak Regency Government and managed by the Department of Education and Culture through its Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD).

The management focuses on collection care, exhibitions, and cultural education outreach.

Museum Collections

The museum displays over 100 historical artifacts that span different eras of Demak’s development — from Hindu-Buddhist influences to the Islamic Sultanate period and later historical phases. Highlights include ancient water filtration stones, fragments of historical pottery, wooden puppets, temple artefacts, and photographs of local leaders.
