What Is the People’s Struggle Monument South Sumatra?

The People’s Struggle Monument South Sumatra, also known as Monpera, is a registered institution in the Museum Registration system and part of the Museum Indonesia network. This special museum is located in Palembang, South Sumatra and commemorates the courageous struggle of local people during the early years of Indonesia’s independence. 

Monpera serves as a memorial and educational center that highlights important historical events including the fierce five days five nights battle against Dutch colonial forces during the Indonesian National Revolution

  • Museum Category: Special Museum — focusing on historical narratives and artifacts related to the people’s struggle. 
  • Museum Type: Not Yet Standardized — indicating that while registered with the national system, it has not yet met all formal museum professional standards. 

 

Ownership & Management

Monpera is owned by the Palembang City Government and managed by the UPTD Sarana dan Objek Wisata, Tourism Office of Palembang. The management handles preservation, exhibitions, visitor information, and educational programming. 

 

History of the Monument

The construction of Monpera began using local government funds (APBD) from 1980 and was completed in 1988. The museum was inaugurated on 23 February 1988 by a high-ranking national official. Its architecture — shaped like a jasmine flower — symbolizes purity and the spirit of the people’s perseverance. 

Monpera stands as a reminder of the Indonesian National Revolution battles that took place in South Sumatra and reflects the sacrifices made by local fighters.

The museum collections at Monpera include a range of historical artifacts:

  • Weapons used in the struggle for independence. 
  • Old currencies and numismatic items. 
  • Photographs, documentation, and illustrations of historic events. 
  • Statues of heroes and uniform displays.
