Historical Background of Museum Sulawesi Tenggara

The origins of Museum Sulawesi Tenggara date back to 1978/1979, when it began as part of a museum development project under the Historical and Archaeological Heritage Division of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Education and Culture. This initiative marked the early efforts to collect and preserve regional historical artifacts.

In 1991, the museum was officially designated as the Provincial Museum of Southeast Sulawesi through a ministerial decree. Following regional autonomy reforms, museum management was transferred to the provincial government, undergoing several institutional adjustments until 2011, when it returned to the Department of Education and Culture as a technical management unit.

Museum Sulawesi Tenggara is a general museum that presents collections related to the history, culture, and archaeological heritage of Southeast Sulawesi.

It is officially registered under the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 74.71.U.01.0275, confirming its recognized status as a museum institution in Indonesia. The museum functions as a center for research, education, and cultural tourism.

Based on museum classification, Museum Sulawesi Tenggara is categorized as a General Museum, as its collections cover various aspects of regional life and history. Museum Sulawesi Tenggara Collection

Museum Sulawesi Tenggara houses 24 collections representing the region’s cultural diversity. These include traditional male ceremonial attire (Kinawo), shell bracelets (Langge Nggare), Padamara lamps, betel nut containers (Gambi), sirih mortars (Usaka), pot hangers (Baeta), social status markers, corong-shaped axe shoes, and coins from the Buton Sultanate. These artifacts provide valuable insights into the social and cultural life of Southeast Sulawesi.
