What Is the Formulation of Proclamation Text Museum?

The Formulation of Proclamation Text Museum is a specialized history museum that focuses on preserving and presenting the story of how Indonesia’s independence proclamation text was created. It does so through preserved spaces, exhibits, and visual narratives that illustrate the key events surrounding the drafting period.

Museum Category & Type

  • Museum Category: History Museum — dedicated to the theme of Indonesia’s independence and national struggle.
  • Museum Type: Specialized Museum, with exhibitions tailored to one of the most defining moments in Indonesian history.

This classification reflects the museum’s role in offering in-depth historical insights rather than a broad survey of unrelated topics.

Management & Ownership

The museum is owned and managed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, under the Directorate General of Culture. The governing team is responsible for conservation, exhibition planning, and educational programming that preserves and communicates national historical memory.

History of the Museum

The museum is situated in a building constructed in the 1920s in Art Deco style by Dutch architect J.F.L. Blankenberg. Over the decades, it changed roles — from property of a Dutch insurance company to British consulate residence and then residence of Admiral Tadashi Maeda during the Japanese occupation.

The building became historically significant as the place where key Indonesian leaders drafted the proclamation text on 16–17 August 1945, a foundational moment in Indonesia’s journey toward independence. In 1992, the building was officially designated as a museum to preserve this legacy and educate future generations.

Museum Collections

The museum’s national museum collections include:

  • Reconstructed spaces such as the drafting room where the proclamation text was created.
  • Exhibits featuring artefacts and replicas related to the historic event.
  • Thematic displays narrating the chronological sequence of events leading up to Indonesia’s independence.

These collections help visitors visualize and understand the significance of the historic drafting process.
