What Is Museum Situs Kepurbakalaan Banten Lama?

The Museum Situs Kepurbakalaan Banten Lama is a museum dedicated to collecting, preserving, studying, and displaying archaeological findings unearthed during research at the ancient Banten Lama site. Situated in an area that once thrived as a major port and political center — notably during the era of the Banten Sultanate — the museum offers an extensive view into centuries of cultural interactions and human activity.

The museum is managed by the Balai Pelestarian Cagar Budaya Banten (BPCB Banten), a cultural heritage preservation agency under the Directorate General of Culture, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia.

History of the Museum

The museum emerged from collaborative archaeological research that began in 1976 involving the National Archaeological Research Center and other heritage agencies. As more artifacts were unearthed, it became clear that a dedicated facility was needed to protect and exhibit these finds.

It was officially inaugurated on July 15, 1985, by Prof. Dr. Harjati Soebadio, then Director General of Culture at the Department of Education and Culture of Indonesia.

The museum’s management is entrusted to the Balai Pelestarian Cagar Budaya Banten (BPCB Banten), ensuring professional stewardship of its collections and ongoing heritage preservation.

Museum Collections
