PASA HARAU Art & Cultural Festival 2017: Experience the Cultural Wonders of MINANGKABAU

Renowned for its famous Rendang and Padang Cuisine, the world class Tour de Singkarak annual mega sport tourism event, and the unique Jam Gadang Clock Tower at the charming little town of Bukittinggi, the province of West Sumatra is blessed with fascinating attractions from stunning scenery to its intriguing architecture and culture. Home of the Minangkabau ethnic group, this is the land where age-old social and cultural traditions are well preserved and are highly valued.


On 25th to 26th August 2017 these traditions of the Minangkabau will be presented at the Pasa Harau Art & Cultural Festival that will be centered at the beautiful Harau Valley in the Limapuluh Kota Regency.

Located about an hour’s drive from the town of Bukittinggi, the Harau Valley, - sometimes dubbed the Yosemite of Indonesia,- has green rice fields hemmed in by huge granite rocks, where refreshing waterfalls tumble down to irrigate the fields.

The Festival is a fusion of art market and cultural expressions that will present art performances and traditional art exhibitions of the Minangkabau especially from the Limapuluh Kota Regency. The festival will be highlighted with traditional folk games, sports, traditional culinary fiesta, a traditional art and handicrafts exhibition, as well as traditional ceremonies and rituals.

Presented in the format of tour packages, the 3 day festival will be filled with numerous exciting programs rarely performed, including: the Kroncong & Sijobang Music Performances, Silek Lanyah Martial Art, Arak Riang Traditional Ceremony, the Pasambahan Traditional Dance, Talempong Pacik Music Ensemble, Randai Art Performance, Tari Piring Dance, Pacu Jawi Bull Races, and a whole lot more.

The Regent of Limapuluh Kota Regency, Irfendi Arbi explained that at the Pasa Harau Art & Cultural festival 2017 tourists and the public will be invited to actively participate in the fiesta. Not only will they be engaged in the various performances, but they are also given the opportunity to stay with the local population and get the chance to experience their daily activities. "Tourists will be able to stay in the homes of local families. In this way they will be interact with one another also in various workshops and performances throughout the festival, depending on the package of their choice" said Irfendi Arbi.

Head of the Team for Tourism Acceleration of West Sumatra Province of the Ministry of Tourism, Raseno Arya expressed his appreciation for the festival. Taking the word "Pasa", which in the Minangkabau language means "market" as basic concept of the festival, it is expected that the event will radiate vibrant festivities. "We appreciate the creativity of the communities as well as all artists and artisans in promoting the beautiful Harau Valley to the world. We are optimistic that the event will carry economic benefits for the community as well as further highlight the splendor of the Harau Valley itself" said Raseno Arya.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya similarly shared his enthusiasm for the Pasa Harau Art & Culture Festival 2017. By attracting the participation of international tourists, the event may further boost Harau Valley in West Sumatra as a world destination. "Through the festival, the beauty of the Harau Valley will spread to different parts of the globe. Welcome to the land of the Minangkabau!" said Minister Arief Yahya.
