Makassar’s Culinary Specialties: Crabs, Seafood and Coto Makassar

 

 

As  a long time harbor town and located close to some of the deepest seas in the Indonesian archipelago, Makassar is THE place to fill your tummy with a wealth of seafood. from scrumptious chili crabs to barbecued fish, steamed prawns and all kinds of seafood, all freshly caught at sea. These are found in many places in Makassar, the most popular being at and near Pantai Losari, or the Losari Beach.  Here is the plaza by the seashore where in the evenings you will find  hawkers selling an array of traditional foods that are no less delicious.

1 | Coto Makassar/ Coto Mangkasara


This is probably the most famous dish to come from this city. Coto Makassar is a rich stew made from ground peanuts. The main protein in the dish is beef and is often served with offal as well. This delicious hot steamy bowl of soup is, of course, served best with a plate of warm fluffy jasmine rice.

 

A restaurant that serves one of the best Coto Makassar dishes is Coto Makassar Nusantara located on Jalan Nusantara right in front of the Makassar port.

 

 

2 | Sop Saudara

This is beef soup served with rice noodles, potato cakes, offal and boiled egg. Locals usually eat it with a plate of warm rice and grilled milkfish. The aroma of this hearty bowl of soup alone will make your mouth water and your tummy rumble. Definitely a must try!

3 | Konro Bakar (Grilled Ribs)

 

This is also one of the most popular dishes to come from South Sulawesi and always a favorite for all meatlovers. Konro Bakar, or grilled ribs, is served in two ways, either as a soup or simply grilled with, certainly, a plate of warm rice and condiments to your liking.

4 | Pisang Epe - Makassar’s Special Banana Dessert

 

This is a popular Makassar specialty. Near ripe bananas are grilled and flattened then covered in a rich sauce of red sugar mixed in a variety of sauces that include durians or jackfruit juice, and finally topped  with a healthy sprinkling of cholate and cheese. The best are found at food stalls and hawkers at Pantai Losari.  

 

 

5 | Barongko

 

Barongko is a type of steamed banana dessert or snack made of sago (rice flour), coconut milk and palm sugar, among others, and steamed in banana leaves. In the past, this dessert was served only to kings and queens of yore and was considered a royal treat. Today you can buy these at supermarkets, bakeries or traditional markets around Makassar.

 

 

6 | Es Pisang Ijo (Iced Green Banana Rolls)

This is another dessert with bananas as its main ingredient. The bananas are wrapped inside green dough made from bananas, pandan and coconut milk. They are then sliced and served in a bowl of crushed ice, syrup and coconut milk.
