The Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum is a historical museum located in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia, established to commemorate the legacy of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II, a key figure in local resistance against colonial powers. The museum preserves regional history, cultural heritage, and important artifacts from the Palembang Sultanate and earlier civilizations. 

It is officially recognized within the National Museum registry and part of the Museum Indonesia network, which supports the preservation and dissemination of Indonesian cultural heritage.

History of the Museum

The museum building stands where the Benteng Kuto Lama (Old Fort) once stood. Over the centuries, the site transformed from a royal palace to a colonial residence before being repurposed as a museum in 1984. It has meanwhile served as military headquarters during World War II and after Indonesian independence. 

The institution honors Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II, a sultan of Palembang renowned for his resistance efforts against Dutch and British colonial forces.

The museum is owned and operated by the City Government of Palembang through the Department of Culture and Tourism. Its responsibilities include conserving collections, organizing exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural activities for visitors and students. 

As part of Museum Indonesia, it contributes to keeping local heritage alive and accessible to the public.
