What Is Museum Huruf Jember
Museum Huruf Jember is a specialized cultural institution dedicated to the history and diversity of letters and writing systems, both from within Indonesia and around the world. It serves as an educational center for understanding how written forms have evolved throughout human history and their cultural significance.

Type of Museum
Unlike general museums, Museum Huruf is classified as a specialty museum, focusing exclusively on writing systems and scripts. Its collection highlights alphabets and writing styles from local Indonesian regions — such as Javanese, Balinese, Bugis, and Batak scripts — alongside global scripts like Latin, Mandarin, and Japanese systems.

Museum Collections
The museum’s exhibits include a wide range of writing systems spanning ancient logograms, regional alphabets, educational displays about script evolution, and even inclusive features like Braille to support accessibility for visually impaired visitors.

Museum Management
Museum Huruf was founded by local cultural enthusiasts Ade Sidiq Permana and Erik Wijayanto, with support from the Rumah Desain Mix Media community in Jember. Today, the museum is managed by the Institute of Museums and Cultural Heritage Nusantara, which oversees its collections and educational programs.

History and Background
Opening its doors on August 30, 2017, Museum Huruf Jember was established to create a learning space centered on the origins of written communication. It has since developed into a noteworthy member of Indonesia’s museum landscape, attracting educators, students, and cultural tourists.

The museum’s vision is to become a hub for learning and appreciation of written culture, connecting Indonesian script traditions with global writing history. Its mission includes promoting public understanding of communication’s cultural roots, preserving traditional scripts, and providing accessible museum collections that educate visitors of all ages.
