Museum Daerah Deli Serdang: A Hub of History & Culture in North Sumatra

Museum Daerah Deli Serdang is a history and culture museum in Lubuk Pakam, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. It is officially recognized in the Museum Nasional registration system and forms part of the Museum Indonesia network, a national initiative to preserve heritage and educate the public.

The museum is owned by the Government of Deli Serdang Regency and managed by its Dinas Kebudayaan, Pemuda, Olahraga dan Pariwisata (Cultural, Youth, Sports, and Tourism Office), functioning as a cultural repository and educational attraction for visitors.

Type & Classification

Museum Daerah Deli Serdang is classified as a General Museum with Type C, meaning it serves a broad educational and cultural function, presenting historical and cultural narratives from multiple eras.

History of the Museum

Construction of Museum Daerah Deli Serdang began in 2001 with funding from the Deli Serdang Regional Budget (APBD). The initial opening took place on August 12, 2003, establishing the museum as a formal institution for heritage preservation.

Later, through Tugas Pembantuan support from the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia, a new museum building was developed in the Lubuk Pakam Cultural and Sports Center and inaugurated on September 8, 2018 by national and regional leaders.

The museum’s architecture is inspired by the “Itik Pulang Petang” philosophy from Malay culture, symbolizing orderliness, harmony, and respect — values integral to the cultural narrative presented.

Museum Collections

Museum Daerah Deli Serdang houses more than 300 historical and cultural objects across three floors. Exhibits range from prehistoric tools and artifacts to relics of the Deli and Serdang Sultanates, traditional clothing, musical instruments, household items, and post-independence memorabilia.

The ground floor focuses on early history and wartime narratives, the second floor highlights Sultanate era artifacts, and the third floor features modern historical documentation and leadership portraits.

Vision & Mission

The vision of Museum Daerah Deli Serdang is to become a competitive cultural center and tourist destination that preserves and showcases local history and culture.

Its mission includes safeguarding local heritage, fostering educational and recreational engagement, and promoting public involvement in museum governance.

Role in Museum Nasional & Museum Indonesia

As part of the Museum Indonesia framework and listed in the Museum Nasional registry, Museum Daerah Deli Serdang plays a key role in preserving regional heritage and contributing to Indonesia’s national cultural narrative.
