Just like Mount Toba in North Sumatra, Mount Tambora is also recognized as one of the world's super volcanoes. Mount Tambora, on the contrary, two centuries later after its mega-eruption is still active and standing today as high as 2,751 meters above sea level. The super volcanic eruption of Mount Tambora on April 12th, 1815 had created a global climate change. Following the mega eruption, the year 1816 is forever remembered as "The Year Without Summer", which had resulted in the worst famine of the 19th century.

Today, aside from attracting seismologists, volcanologists, archeologists, biologists, and other scientists, Mount Tambora is also known as a prime destination for mountaineers from all over the globe who enjoy the thrill of conquering its challenging tracks.

Besides the Tambora volcano, there are also a lot of other fascinating sites you can explore while you are here. For instance, Lakey Beach has been known to offer Sumbawa's most consistent and challenging waves for surfers. What makes the beach special is that the waves appear to sweep to the left instead of right, which is more commonly found. The beach's uniqueness combined with its natural beauty has become a sensation, especially among surfing enthusiasts.

West of Mount Tambora and Sumbawa Island, there is a little island that has been known as one of the favorite hideaways for world celebrities: Moyo Island. The late Princess Diana, rock legend David Bowie, retired Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar, and Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova are among some of the famous names that have spent their vacation here. The exotic Moyo Island is surrounded with many beautiful beaches such as Air Manis Beach, Tanjung Pasir Beach, Takat Sagele Beach, and more.

Lying close to Moyo Island is Satonda Island which is especially stunning when viewed from the top of Mount Tambora. Here you can find a very unique salt water lake. Satonda also stores a wealth of coral reefs in the surrounding waters which makes it a perfect place for snorkeling and diving.

There is also Nisa Pudu Island with its pristine natural landscape, Oi Hodo Beach with its refreshing serene ambience, Doro Ncanga Savana where you can watch cattle graze, and a whole lot of other amazing places you can visit during the festival.
