PENTINGSARI: A VILLAGE DESIGNED, DEVELOPED, CRAFTED, AND ENJOYED BY PEOPLE

Being located at 700 meters above the sea level, at the bottom of one of the most active volcano on earth, Mt. Merapi, Pentingsari is known for its fantastic nature, as well as cultural wisdom.

Although its location is only 22.5 km from the city of Yogyakarta, Pentingsari Village is profoundly traditional. Its people still use traditional tools from nature, which should be very intriguing for those who seek an introduction to Indonesia's ancient natives.
Bringing themes of nature, culture, and agriculture with thoughtful insights to the environment, Pentingsari Village offers a deeper understanding about nature, traditional culture, arts, and local wisdom that's solidly rooted within the locals’ hearts. Since 2008, Pentingsari has been developed as a part of Yogyakarta's Village Tourism Project.

Started as a relatively underdeveloped village, with an infertile soil, isolated location, and people with averagely low income, the mutual cooperation of Pentingsari's locals have driven this village into an amazingly rich community that attracts people from all over the world.

Putting nature and culture as their main potential, Pentingsari does not need to sell luxury; everything you see inside the village are as traditional and authentic as they come. You will get a chance to observe the rural life, and their wisdoms.

By displaying the local wisdom wonderfully, the village was recently awarded and appreciated by Sleman’s Regent, naming their system “the people’s economy”.

HOW TO GET THERE

It is relatively easy to get to Pentingsari Village; the whole journey takes about an hour from the center of Yogyakarta City by car. The village is north of the city, facing the great Mt. Merapi.

From the center of the city, you need to make your way to Jalan Kaliurang heading to Jalan Pamungkas, and then take right at the fork to Jalan Meces Pokoh. Continue straight until you see a junction with a gas station, then go straight and take the first right to Jalan Cangkringan. Follow the long road to Jalan Raya Merapi Golf in Wukirsari, for about 2 kilometers until you see a badminton court on your right. Then, you should take the first left from there, another left at the end, and another left at the first turn, about 900 meters. Pentingsari Village will be on the right.

WHERE TO STAY

Many of the locals’ houses around Pentingsari Village provide homestays with modest yet complete facilities. It will feel more like a home than it is a resort, and that’s a good thing, because you can get to know the highly hospitable people in Pentingsari Village directly. The homestays’ prices range from IDR 70.000 to IDR 200.000, excluding tour rates & tickets.
