Summer is here! The season that is always awaited by many of us each year provides a perfect opportunity to enjoy the outside when the sun stays up for longer than usual. When one thinks about summer, some of the things that usually come up are going to the beach, playing in the water, or sightseeing. These activities are no doubt fun to do during the summer, even more so when you do them in beautiful places! In Indonesia, many places are perfect for spending summer. 1. The Spectacular Lake Toba

At over 1,145 square kilometers, with a depth of up to 450 meters, it’s no surprise that this lake is renowned as the largest lake in Southeast Asia. Lake Toba, which occupies a caldera of a supervolcano in the south of Medan City, North Sumatra, is filled and surrounded by countless wonders. In the center lies a huge island known as the Samosir Island. Home to the Batak Toba tribe, the island offers various interesting cultural experiences. Buy local products at Tomok Market, see how ulos; a traditional woven fabric of Batak, is made at Ulos Huta Raja Village, and learn about the history of Batak Toba at Huta Bolon Museum. Hills that stretch around the lake also provide a spectacular panorama worth capturing.

 

2. The Stunning Borobudur

One of the world’s largest Buddhist monuments, Borobudur Temple doesn’t only impress its visitors with marvelous design from the ancient days. The temple which is a part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site is also surrounded by stunning scenery and numerous fantastic attractions. Sitting atop a green lush hill in Magelang, Central Java, Borobudur Temple was built during the Syailendra dynasty between AD 780 and 840. The structure was made without any cement or adhesive, instead, it was made with a complex system where blocks of the structure were locked together like a puzzle. Featuring intricate reliefs and hundreds of Buddha statues, Borobudur Temple is a perfect spot for witnessing the sunrise and sunset. Beyond the temple, there are many other spots worth checking out too, such as the museums, Mendut Temple, Punthuk Setumbu, and the Chicken Church.

Located in the southern part of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Mandalika offers a complete leisure package. The beaches conjure an image of serenity, the waves provide a challenge for surfers, and a number of high-end resorts can be found easily near these beaches. The local cuisine and culture of Mandalika will also put you in awe. Have a taste of Mandalika’s delightful delicacies such as Taliwang chicken and Rembiga satay, then continue your journey by visiting Sade Village in Central Lombok. 4. The Pristine Likupang

Still barely touched, Likupang in North Minahasa, North Sulawesi provides an extraordinary getaway for those who are looking to spend their summer in peace. The shores are made up of white sandy beaches and vast green hills fill up most of the land. The crystal clear waters that surround Likupang also boast astonishing marine life where vibrant coral reefs grow profusely and exotic sea creatures swim freely. In 2007, the sea of Likupang Beach stunned Indonesia’s World Wildlife Fund as the rare species of green sea turtle was spotted around the area, proving the fine condition of the beach’s ecosystem.

 

5. The Vibrant Labuan Bajo

Situated on the western corner of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, Labuan Bajo is one of the most favorite destinations in the province. Its main attractions lie in Komodo National Park which consists of numerous islands each boasting an exceptional shoreline and magnificent hills. These include Komodo Island, Rinca Island, and Padar Island. About a few kilometers away from Labuan Bajo you can also find several fascinating natural spots. There’s the Mirror Stone Cave, where you can witness marvelous limestone cave walls. There’s also the Rangko Cave, where you can experience the amazing sensation of swimming inside a cave!
