Visit Jakarta and Join Marathon Event in 2019


The Ministry of Tourism and the Jakarta City Government will hold the 7th Annual Jakarta Marathon on the 27th of October 2019. This year the theme is “Light Up Your Energy”.

Held annually at the end of October since 2013, the Mandiri Jakarta Marathon strives to be the most preferred International Road Race Marathon in Asia and Major Marathon in the World. This mega sport-tourism event is jointly presented by the Ministry of Tourism of Indonesia and the Jakarta Provincial Government in cooperation with promoters INSPIRO and Bank Mandiri as the main sponsors. Sports tourism is one of the main tourist attraction that can generate significant amounts of domestic and international tourists. “I am confident that this year’s Jakarta Marathon will be more festive than the previous years. Our ministry is massively promoting this event abroad,” stated Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Mr. Arief Yahya. Since 2013, the Jakarta Marathon has drawn runners from around the globe, both professionals and amateurs. Last year over 12 thousand runners from various countries joined the event.

Registration has been open since the 8th of February 2019. This year the categories are 5K, 10K, Half Marathon (21K) & Full Marathon (42,195K) which starts as early as 4.30 am. The routes are certified by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) with an elevation level of 0 m/km.

Like the previous years, leading up to the grand event, the committee for the event will hold another Jakarta Marathon Expo from the 24th to the 26th of October 2019 at the P7 Ballroom, Kuningan City, Jakarta. This will be followed by Maratoonz (children's camper) on the 27th of October with a running distance of approximately 1-1.3K for children aged 5-10 years starting at 08.00 am. 

This year the start and finish line will be at one of Jakarta’s historical sporting landmark, Bung Karno Sports Arena or popularly known as Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) named after Sukarno, Indonesia’s first President. The sports complex hosts main stadiums, secondary stadiums, football fields, aquatic stadiums, tennis stadiums (indoor and outdoor), hockey, baseball and archery fields, and several indoors gymnasiums. The complex was built in 1960 for the1962 Asian Games and recently underwent major reconstruction for the 2018 Asian Games and 2018 Asian Para Games.

The runners will pass by several historical landmarks of Jakarta during their race such as Stasiun Kota Tua, Museum Bank Indonesia, Masjid Istiqlal, Gereja Katedral, and Gedung Kesenian.

Getting There

There are several ways to reach Gelora Bung Karno. One of the easiest and most practical ways is by riding the MRT and stopping at The MRT Istora Station, which directly puts you in the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex. Other alternative modes of transportation include taxi and online bike/car ride.

Get Around

The Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex is commonly used for public events and hosts different festivals on the weekends.
