SURABAYA CROSS CULTURE INTERNATIONAL FOLK ART FESTIVAL 2018

 

Presenting captivating unique traditional folk arts and performances from many corners of the globe, the Surabaya Cross Culture International Folk Art Festival (SCCIFAF) 2018 is currently ongoing from July 15th to 19th, 2018 in Surabaya, capital city of East Java Province.

A spectacular fiesta of folk arts from around the world, the festival involves no less than 300 participants from 10 countries across 4 continents.

Representing Asia are China, South Korea, and Uzbekistan. From Europe are Germany, Poland, Romania, and Russia. Meanwhile Mexico represents the American Continent and New Zealand the continent of Australia-Oceania.

Aside from Surabaya, Indonesian folk arts presented are from Bone (South Sulawesi), Singkawang (West Kalimantan), and Banjarmasin (South Kalimantan). In total, 210 international and 90 Indonesian artists will present the many and varied fascinating cultures of the world.

For a full 5 days, the cultural troupes will showcase their own distinct unique folk art in traditional dances, music, folk games, and a lot of other intriguing folk attractions.
The festival kicked off with a bang with the Opening Ceremony held on Surabaya’s main street of Tunjungan, followed by a vibrant cultural parade across the city to the Surya Park, also involving colorfully decorated Becak trishaw.

After the opening ceremony and parade, an array of sub-events and performances will be held at several venues across the city such as at the Surabaya’s City Hall,  the G-Walk Citrajaya, The Siola Building, Ciputra World, and the Royal Plaza.

The festival will also include a historical city tour, an Art and Cultural Workshop, a Tree Planting Campaign, and a fish barbeque fiesta at the Kenjeran Beach Recreational Park.

The Special Officer in charge of Multi-cultural events from the Ministry of Tourism, Mrs. Esthy Reko Astuti explained that SCCIFAF 2018 is an outstanding event that inspires the world. “SCCIFAF 2018 is a global event where each participant brings out the best features of his or her country.

Moreover, they will inspire spectators and through them and the media, to the rest of the world presenting their diverse arts, cultures, and music. We are confident that the event will attract a significant number of tourists,” said Esthy Reko Astuti.

Home to many of the nation’s fiercest Independence fighters, Surabaya is known as Kota Pahlawan (the City of Heroes), so around the city are one can see many statues commemorating the many heroes who have fought and died for Indonesia’s Freedom.
