The Charm of Tourism Villages Surrounding Borobudur Temple

When you visit the Borobudur Temple Tourism Area, don’t forget to explore the nearby villages as well, Sobat Pesona! Here are four tourist villages in the Borobudur District, Magelang Regency, each offering unique natural scenery, culinary delights, and handmade crafts by local residents. Put on some comfortable clothes, as you may need to do a bit of light trekking to reach the viewpoints or enjoy water activities. The journey is worth it, though, as you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking rural landscapes set against the Menoreh Hills and fresh, healing air.

Embrace Nature from the Hilltops and Progo River

Several scenic trekking spots await you in Giripurno, Giritengah, and Kenalan villages, perfect for catching the sunrise and admiring the view.

1. Punthuk Sunrise Posmati, Giritengah Village

The path to this peak is a bit challenging with its uphill trails, but if the weather is clear and you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see the majestic views of Mount Merapi, Mount Merbabu, Mount Sumbing, Mount Sindoro, Mount Telomoyo, and Mount Andong. According to locals, Posmati once served as a resting spot for Prince Diponegoro’s troops to monitor colonial movements.

2. Curug Watuploso in Giripurno Village

This unique three-tiered waterfall is breathtaking, especially the top tier, which stands around 10 meters high. It flows year-round, even during the dry season, and is easily accessible by car to the entrance.

3. Gondopurowangi Peak and Pitulasan Waterfall, Kenalan Village

From Gondopurowangi Peak, the lush greenery merges with blue skies and clouds as far as the eye can see. Visitors can camp here with prior arrangements for safety, to catch the sunrise. You can also enjoy the 17-meter Pitulasan Waterfall, with its crystal-clear, refreshing waters.

4. Getek (Bamboo Rafting) for a Scenic Sunset, Sambeng Village

Enjoy a serene and thrilling experience on a traditional bamboo raft at the Wisata Getek Balong on the Progo River. The raft drifts along slowly under the evening sun, offering picturesque views. Small rafts fit four guests with two rowers, while larger rafts accommodate up to 12. Life jackets, helmets, and additional flotation support are available to ensure safety.

Shopping for Souvenirs by Local Female Artisans

For souvenirs, check out some unique products made by the women of Giripurno Village, such as Erni and Desi, who offer creations under the brands Giri Roso and Giri Cengkeh. They utilize local resources like Etawa goats and cloves to produce items such as Wedang Uwuh, a traditional herbal drink, and Wedang Jahe with Etawa goat milk, as well as hand sanitizers, liquid soap, and bar soap.

In Kenalan Village, you’ll find Scotela Slondok, a crunchy snack made from cassava and shaped like ancient coins with a hole in the middle. Komaroyani started this product in the 1990s and now processes about a ton of cassava each month – an addictive treat you’ll have a hard time putting down! Also, the local women create woven pandan leaf crafts, including keychains, storage boxes, and stylish large bags, which have even been ordered by hotels for guest souvenirs.

In Sambeng Village, you can try a unique fruit salad called Rujak Semelak, made from noni fruit. Although it has a strong smell, Riyatun transforms it into a fresh, sweet dish with various spices. Initially reserved for special guests, Rujak Semelak is now available as a takeaway treat. Enjoy it with her other creation, delicious cassava crackers.

Farmers and Guardians of Traditional Arts in Giritengah Village

Meet the artisans of traditional arts in Giritengah Village, like Irfandi, founder and instructor at Sanggar Abinaya, who welcomes anyone interested in learning to dance. Irfandi also hand-carves wooden masks for traditional dance costumes, using pule wood and horsehair. Though he didn’t complete primary school, this self-taught craftsman and farmer is dedicated to preserving traditional art, producing unique masks that attract niche buyers.

Take the time to explore these hidden gems, Sobat Pesona, where you’ll uncover new stories among the nature, culture, and communities in each tourist village.
