Museum Wayang Kekayon

Museum Wayang Kekayon is a cultural museum dedicated to preserving Indonesia’s rich wayang tradition. Located in Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, the museum serves as an educational and cultural space that showcases the diversity of wayang across the archipelago.

History of Museum Wayang Kekayon

The museum was founded by the late Prof. DR. dr. KPH. Soejono Prawirohadikusumo and officially inaugurated in 1991 by KGPAA Paku Alam VIII. Since its establishment, the museum has been envisioned as a center for cultural preservation and wayang education.

Museum Wayang Kekayon is a specialized museum focusing on the collection, preservation, and communication of wayang art. It is officially registered under the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 34.71.K.06.0048.

Museum Type and Classification

The museum is classified as a Specialized Museum due to its focus on wayang and categorized as a Type B Museum, reflecting its regional scope and management capacity.

Ownership and Management

Museum Wayang Kekayon is owned and managed by the Yogyakarta Wayang Kekayon Museum Foundation, which oversees all operational and cultural programs of the museum.

Museum Collections

Currently, the museum does not record a fixed number of collections. Nevertheless, it continues to function as an important center for cultural documentation and interpretation of wayang philosophy.
