UBUD WRITERS AND READERS FESTIVAL 2017
Southeast Asia's largest and most renowned cultural and literary event, the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (UWRF), will return this year for its 14 the edition to take place on 25th to 29th October 2017 in the town of Ubud, the cultural heart of the enchanting island of Bali. The festival will highlight the special theme on "Origins".

Comprising more than 150 of the world's leading authors, artists and activists from 31 countries, the festival will feature its most diverse program yet, having well and truly evolved into a global hub of education, inspiration and empowerment. From Indonesia to Iran, Canada to South Korea, the Philippines to Pakistan and dozens of countries in between, the five-day program of impassioned in-conversations, intimate literary lunches, and powerful live performances promises a world of stories, ideas and solutions at a time when amplifying diverse voices is more critical than ever.

Among leading literary luminaries attending are expected UK's king of crime writing, Ian Rankin, Canada's newest literary star, Madeleine Thien, revered Indonesian journalists and novelists Seno Gumira Ajidarma and Leila S. Chudori, Malaysian minority rights activist and author, Marina Mahathir, and one of Indonesia's most prolific and respected writers, feminist icon Nh. Dini.They'll be joined by one of the world's best-loved authors Jung Chang, whose family autobiography Wild Swans sold over ten million copies after being banned in China; eminent British writer, journalist and broadcaster Simon Winchester, whose bestseller Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded has long been a firm fixture on bookshelves across the region; one of Indonesia's favorite and most prolific poets, Joko Pinurbo; and Saroo Brierley, whose memoir was adapted into the blockbuster film Lion; and a whole lot more.

From humble beginnings in 2002, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has evolved into one of the world's most celebrated literary and artistic events – an annual pilgrimage for lovers of literature and conversation. The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is the major annual project of the not-for-profit foundation, the Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati. It was first conceived by Janet DeNeefe, Co-founder of the Foundation, as a healing project in response to the first Bali bombing.
