Information

Lenong

Lenong is a traditional Betawi theatre art that has developed since the colonial era. The performances combine humor, satire, and social commentary delivered through spontaneous dialogue. Lenong typically uses the distinctive and entertaining Betawi dialect. Gambang kromong music accompanies and enhances the atmosphere of the show. Once performed in village settings, Lenong is now frequently staged in large theatres and on television.

Over time, Lenong has evolved into two main types: Lenong Denes and Lenong Preman. Lenong Denes features stories of royalty and heroism, while Lenong Preman focuses more on everyday community life. Actor improvisation is a key attraction, making each performance unique. Although modern entertainment options are abundant, Lenong remains a strong symbol of Betawi cultural identity. With proper preservation, this art form will continue to live in the hearts of the Betawi people.
