Initially managed independently, it was officially inaugurated and acquired by the Special Region of Yogyakarta Government in 1979. In 2001, the museum received recognition from UNESCO as part of the world’s cultural heritage. In 2014, Yogyakarta was officially designated as a Batik City by the World Craft Council.
