Museum Batik Yogyakarta is an important cultural institution dedicated to preserving and promoting batik as one of Indonesia’s most valuable cultural heritages. History of Museum Batik Yogyakarta

The museum was first established in the 1960s through the initiative of Hadi Nugroho. Initially managed independently, it was officially inaugurated and acquired by the Special Region of Yogyakarta Government in 1979. In 2001, the museum received recognition from UNESCO as part of the world’s cultural heritage. In 2014, Yogyakarta was officially designated as a Batik City by the World Craft Council.

Museum Batik Yogyakarta is a specialized museum focusing on education, preservation, and knowledge development related to batik. The museum is officially registered under the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 34.71.K.06.0208.

The museum is classified as a Specialized Museum due to its focus on batik. In terms of classification, it is categorized as a Type C Museum, managed by a foundation with local and national outreach.

Ownership and Management

Museum Batik Yogyakarta is owned by Suhartati Susanto and managed by the Yogyakarta Batik and Embroidery Museum Foundation, which oversees museum operations, educational programs, and batik preservation initiatives.

Museum Collections

Currently, Museum Batik Yogyakarta does not record a fixed number of permanent collections. Nevertheless, it continues to function as a knowledge and research center for batik through documentation, studies, and educational activities.
