History of Museum Wayang Indonesia
Located in Wuryantoro District, Wonogiri Regency, Museum Wayang Indonesia was initiated by the then Regent of Wonogiri, Begug Poernomosidi. The museum was officially inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, in 2004.
From its inception, the museum was designed as a center for preserving and showcasing wayang from various regions. Its collections reflect the diversity and artistic richness of Indonesian puppetry traditions.
Museum Wayang Indonesia is a specialized museum focused on the preservation, documentation, and education of Indonesian wayang. It showcases various types of puppets representing the rich cultural diversity of Indonesia, particularly from Central Java, West Java, and Bali.
The museum is officially registered under the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 33.12.K.04.0298, confirming its recognized status as a cultural institution.

Museum Wayang Indonesia is classified as a Specialized Museum, as it concentrates on a single theme: Indonesian puppetry. In terms of institutional standards, the museum is currently categorized as not yet meeting national museum standards.
The museum is owned by the Government of Wonogiri Regency and managed by the Department of Education and Culture of Wonogiri Regency, which oversees collection management, educational programs, and museum development.
Museum Collections
Museum Wayang Indonesia houses approximately 200 puppet collections, with 88 officially recorded items. Visitors can find various types of wayang, including Wayang Kulit Purwa, Wayang Golek, Wayang Bali, Wayang Klitik, Wayang Suket, Wayang Beber, masks, and unfinished puppet figures.
Notable collections include Patih Udawa Puppet, Werkudara Puppet, Semar Pengruwatan Puppet, and the Gunungan. The museum also features a unique miniature painting measuring 3 x 3 cm by Ki Djoko Sutedjo, recognized by MURI as the smallest Semar painting in Indonesia.
