Historical Background of Paheman Radya Pustaka

Originally named Paheman Radya Pustaka, meaning “a gathering place of royal manuscripts,” the institution was founded on 28 October 1890 by KRA Sosrodiningrat IV, a senior court official of the Surakarta Palace. It initially housed classical manuscripts authored by kings and palace scholars.

Over time, the institution expanded beyond literary collections to include historical artifacts donated by various figures. This evolution led to its recognition as Museum Radya Pustaka.
