Kretek Museum

The Kretek Museum is a specialized museum located in Kudus Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. This museum serves as a cultural and historical institution dedicated to preserving the history of kretek,  a clove-infused cigarette that is part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

It is widely known as one of the only museums in the country focused on the evolution of kretek and its impact on society and industry. The Kretek Museum (locally referred to as Museum Kretek) focuses on the historical development of kretek from its humble beginnings to modern industrial production. The museum showcases tools and equipment once used to make kretek by hand, modern production machinery, and dioramas depicting various stages of tobacco and clove cultivation and cigarette manufacturing.

Located at Jl. Getas Pejaten No. 155 in Getas Pejaten Village, Jati District, the museum is situated in a region often referred to as the City of Kretek due to its long history in clove cigarette production.

History of the Museum

The idea of the Kretek Museum was initiated by Supardjo Roestam, then Governor of Central Java, who saw the significant contribution of the kretek industry to the local economy. The museum was built with funding from the Persatuan Pengusaha Rokok Kudus (Association of Cigarette Entrepreneurs in Kudus) and officially opened on October 3, 1986.

Its purpose was to document how kretek developed rapidly in Java, particularly in Kudus, and to preserve this cultural legacy for future generations.
