Accompanying German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (popularly known as SBY) officiated at the Opening Ceremony of the Internationale Tourismus Börse (ITB) Berlin 2013, the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show. In his speech, President Yudhoyono boldly warned all present of the dangerous beauty of Indonesia: "Indonesia is addictive, consider yourselves warned". Many visitors have continued to return over again to enjoy its wonderful beauty and the warmth of its people, said SBY.
Speaking In front of over 5000 world tourism stakeholders attending the Opening Ceremony at the Messe Berlin, on Tuesday evening, 5 March, President Yudhoyono presented a compelling speech selling and promoting Indonesia as a world tourist destination by pointing out that Indonesia has it all.
Aside from the already popular Bali, there are still a whole lot of other equally fascinating sites. Among these are the magnificent Borobudur Temple, a designated World Heritage monument, and most certainly the “Jurassic Park” of Indonesia, Komodo Island."For those of you who are born to be wild - you might want to visit the Orang-Utans in Borneo" stated President Yudhoyono inviting attendees to visit Tanjung Puting and Camp Leakey in Kalimantan. He also added that for those who enjoyed underwater splendors there are Bunaken in Manado , the Moluccas and obviously “the lost Paradise” of Raja Ampat in Papua.
Calling himself Indonesia’s Tourism Ambassador, the president explained that as the largest archipelago in the world, Indonesia has a diverse number of fascinating ethnic groups, cultures and languages. Predominantly Muslim, Indonesia's population adheres to different world religions.
Aside from magnificent landscapes and natural features, President Yudhoyono also introduced the wonders of Indonesia ‘s culinary delights: ”Rendang from Padang has been acknowledged by CNN as the most delicious food in the world” said the President which was responded with roaring applause from the audience. Humorously the president added that in Indonesia tourists can wear sandals and shorts to various places, but better not to official ceremonies and wedding receptions.
President SBY hopes that with the part that Indonesia plays at this year’s Official Partner Country of ITB Berlin 2013, this will boost the number of visitors to Indonesia, to achieve the target of 10 million tourists in by 2014.
Closing his speech the President jokingly said that he better stop here since Chancellor Angela Merkel had given him only this short time to promote Indonesia, which was responded with laughter and applause.
